Today, I would like to introduce the works of Zenji Uragami, a leading master of Bizen craftwork and recipient of numerous awards.
Zenji-sensei’s style is characterized by a realistic yet somewhat stylized form, which vividly conveys the dynamism and vitality of his subjects.
These two incense containers are no exception, perfectly capturing the strength of the animals they depict.
In Japanese, the word for "animal" (doubutsu) literally translates to "moving thing."
Animals are constantly on the move, with their expressions and postures ever-changing.
Transforming such moving subjects into three-dimensional sculptures—that, I believe, lies at the heart of the challenge in creating fine craftwork.
It requires a technique that breathes movement into a static object.
The motion expressed through skeletal structure, musculature, and the flow of fur seems to truly bring these pieces to life.
