Today’s update features the work of the elusive and highly acclaimed master, Hannyukyo Manabe.
Named "Bizen Chacho" (Bizen tea pot), this piece is a harmonious blend of profound earthy texture and a refined, clean aesthetic.
Its calm yet dignified presence speaks eloquently of the extraordinary skill of its creator.
The perfectly fitted lid, the unique craftsmanship of the foot, and the gentle swell of the body—there are truly many highlights to behold.
In particular, the stunning constriction from the rim down to the waist is both lustrous and natural, making it absolutely wonderful.
For those curious about who Mr. Manabe was, here is a brief biography.
Born in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, he learned metal engraving at Suzuki Seisakusho in Tokyo and created silverware in Okayama City under the name Seiryo Manabe.
He began creating Bizen ware around 1935, firing his works at the Toyo Kaneshige kiln.
Around 1941, he built his own kiln in Higashiyama, Okayama City, and continued his pottery work for about five years.
In 1945, he evacuated to Wada, Takatsuki Village, Akaiwa District, where he built another kiln.
From then on, he used the art name "Hannyukyo" for his ceramics until he passed away in 1963.
He was an artist with such a background who was active during the same period as Mr. Toyo Kaneshige.
His works are truly rare; the last time I saw one was several years ago.
Each and every one of his pieces is colored with such fresh sensibility that they possess a charm that never feels dated.
