Hello everyone, how are you all doing?Today, for the fifth installment of our popular "Cherished Items Series,"we take a look at the favorite pieces of Masao Akiya.Although titled "Sake Drinking," this time he showed us two of his favorite plates. This is a plate from the prestigious Kutani ware studio "Suda Seika."He purchased it in his 20s, before he became an independent ceramic artist. At that time, he was just beginning to take an interest in ceramics, and he bought it while visiting the kiln during a trip to Ishikawa. The first-generation Seika Suda was someone who greatly influenced Rosanjin Kitaoji, and it is no wonder that the hand-painting, which is simple yet remains stylish to this day, is so masterful. The second piece is a nerikomi (molded inlay) square plate he crafted himself.Near Masao Akiya's studio in Ibe, there is a large pond called Hiraike, and he says he made this using yellow clay gathered from that area.It is a sentimental piece that marked the beginning of his work with nerikomi, and he has cherished it for a long time.We have also received a nerikomi round plate made with the same Hiraike clay, which we hope to introduce on our website soon. Both pieces are characteristic of Akiya-sensei, whose work focuses on the theme of "pieces that are both easy to use and intriguing."
