Description

This Bizen sake flask (tokkuri) is the work of Jumpei Kaneshige, the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige, the leading figure of the Kaneshige family. It is an appealing piece featuring a kiln-change (yohen) effect that is deep in color yet elegant in its understated aesthetic, combined with the exquisite charm of a net-like "enoki-hada" texture across the surface. The "nuke" (uncovered areas) that appear at key points feature a rich orange hue, yet are balanced by a darker color palette, resulting in a work with a wonderful, profound depth and a tasteful quality that belies the impressions one might expect from its colors. The surface is covered in a "kase-goma" (dry, crusty ash glaze) that creates the "enoki-hada" texture, giving it the serene, seasoned appearance of an ancient tree. This harmonizes beautifully with the subtle kiln-change effect, with each element enhancing the other to elevate the piece to even greater heights.

Signed wooden box (shiho-zan lid)
Mouth diameter 3.8cm × Body diameter 9.1cm × Body diameter 9.0cm × Height 14.8cm. Capacity approx. 410ml
