Description
This is a Bizen incense burner by Tozei Fujiwara, an artist whose wide-ranging interests and knowledge in literature, Western painting, and music, combined with his rich experience, enabled him to create numerous works overflowing with artistic sensibility. The piece features the characteristically cute and charming dove craftsmanship for which Tozei is known. While the incense burner has a standard form, the fine details—such as the cherry blossoms carved on the sides and the openwork on the lid—reveal his high level of technical skill. In particular, the dove perched atop the lid is adorably crafted, fully showcasing the artist's talent for charming forms. Despite this, the piece maintains a chic, subdued color palette overall, with a firing finish that evokes a sense of history.
