Description

This Karatsu sake cup is by Takeshi Ikenishi, an artist who, true to the name of his studio Fugen-gama ("Silent Kiln"), imbues his work with a powerful message, captivating audiences with his magnificent and bold creations. Featuring a "kawa-kujira" (whale skin) style of brushwork, its elegant craftsmanship is characteristic of Ikenishi-sensei, whose deep knowledge spans ceramics from all times and places. The glaze appears as if repelled by the clay body, a distinctive feature of his Karatsu ware. The foot, with its "chirimen" (crepe-like) texture, has been fired exceptionally well, and the soft, madder-like kiln marks possess a profound charm.

With signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 7.1cm × Diameter 6.8cm × Height 5.3cm

Takeshi Ikenishi was born in Suita City, Osaka, in 1961. After studying Japanese, Korean, and Chinese ceramics in various regions, he built a five-chamber climbing kiln and a single-chamber cave kiln at his current location in January 1994. He has been presenting his work in solo exhibitions since 1995.
