Description

This Ibe sake flask is a work by Mashiro Aiga, an artist known for creating works that are as uncompromisingly direct as they are bold. The piece was crafted by throwing the body up to the shoulder on a potter's wheel, then adding coil-built clay to form the upper section. The wheel marks, which emphasize the powerful flow of the clay, and the spatula marks on the base work in tandem to create the rugged aesthetic characteristic of earthenware. The profound appearance achieved through four separate firings, using a slip with a higher iron content than usual, is truly exquisite. Packed with more depth and elements than its price suggests, this is a piece that even a beginner can enjoy for a lifetime. Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Rim 4.2cm x Body 9.0cm x 9.0cm x Height 14.1cm; Capacity approx. 380cc Mashiro Aiga graduated from the Okayama Prefectural Bizen Pottery Center in 1997. He built a fully subterranean anagama kiln in Sabukaze in 2003, followed by a second, semi-subterranean anagama kiln in 2004, where he continues to devote himself to his craft.
