Description

This Bizen sake cup is by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a former live-in apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. It features a wild aesthetic derived from mountain clay, combining a strong scarlet hue with rugged "kase-goma" (dry sesame glaze). The character changes between the front and the interior, with the latter showcasing a more yellowish, Namban-style clay texture compared to the front. The roughly carved facets of the foot and the black specks of iron sand give the piece an finish that evokes the scent of the earth. Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.2cm × Diameter 6.3cm × Height 6.4cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father’s love for pottery, he pursued a career in ceramics. After graduating from high school, he studied under Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989 to master his craft. Following seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and struck out on his own in 1996, successfully firing his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Exhibition of Northern Confectionery Vessels I Want to Use," and in 2002, he was selected for the "Chanoyu Plastic Arts Exhibition" for the first time.
