Description

This large platter is by Shusaku Taku, an artist who takes the everyday inspirations of life and uses them as a fermenting agent to shape Bizen ware—a craft that has matured while closely accompanying human activity throughout its long, continuous history. This piece possesses the distinct flavor of a classic Bizen large platter, exuding a rustic yet bold atmosphere. Although not flashy, it features a well-balanced array of characteristics including yellow sesame glaze, matte sesame glaze, fire-cord (hidasuki) markings, and the raw beauty of the clay itself; it is truly a work that shines only when put to use. The clay used is rich in iron content, resulting in a subdued reddish-brown for the fire-cord markings, while on the back, the reaction between the iron in the clay and the sesame glaze produces a seep of amber-colored kiln transformation.
