Description
This Bizen sake cup is by Takashi Soga, who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which Old Bizen pottery was fired. Without using any machinery such as electric wheels or thermometers, the piece was fired in a primitive kiln based solely on his own empirical knowledge. The piece was formed using the coil-building technique rather than a potter's wheel, and as a result, the interior has a two-tiered appearance, giving the form a rustic and powerful handmade feel. The well-fired, beige-toned clay body is rich in black iron flecks, perfectly recreating the surface of Old Bizen ware. This work is a brilliant fruition of Mr. Soga's passionate longing for Old Bizen.
