Description
This is a slightly earlier Bizen sake cup by Susumu Kaneshige, the eldest son of the master craftsman Sozan Kaneshige, whose work captivates many with its harmony of delicate, elegant clay texture and powerful form. The well-fired yellow sesame glaze blends harmoniously with the bright brown clay body, creating a coloration characteristic of Kaneshige Bizen. True to the Kaneshige family's dedication to the quality of their clay, the seemingly unremarkable clay texture reveals a rich, lustrous shiso-red hue, offering a rare and incomparable aesthetic that only Kaneshige can achieve. The wide, masculine-carved foot rim possesses such strength that even the potter’s mark is integrated into the overall landscape of the piece. (*Note: As this is a slightly earlier work, it includes a potter's biography dated up to Showa 64 (1989). Please be aware that although it shows little sign of use, it is a vintage item.)
Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 6.7cm × Diameter 6.5cm × Height 6.0cm Susumu Kaneshige is the eldest son of Intangible Cultural Property holder Sozan Kaneshige. After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at Kyoto University in 1969, he began his training in pottery under his father. He became independent in 1979. He primarily focuses on tea ceramics made on the potter's wheel, characterized by deep, refined firing. He strives to eliminate unnecessary decoration, focusing instead on pouring his soul directly into the clay. He rarely enters public exhibitions, preferring to present his work primarily through solo exhibitions, which he holds energetically every year at department stores in cities including Okayama, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto. In 1995, he held a solo exhibition in Munich, Germany, and in 1997, he exhibited at the Bizen Ware Paris Exhibition.
