Description

This Bizen teacup is by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a former apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. By using mountain clay as a base, this piece achieves a matte, reddish texture distinct from that of Bizen rice-field clay. The superb scarlet hue, reminiscent of the raw red clay found on cliffs, accentuates an even more weathered and rustic aesthetic than rice-field clay. Depending on the exposure to the fire, the piece shifts between stronger yellowish and purplish tones, providing a subtle, nuanced landscape that reveals various expressions throughout daily use. After graduating from high school, he studied pottery techniques under the master Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho Kaneshige, starting in 1989. After seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 to strike out on his own, and successfully fired his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Northern Confectionery Vessels I Want to Use" exhibition, and in 2002, he was selected for the "Tea Ceremony Forms" exhibition for the first time.
