Description

This is a blue sake cup by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who made his highly anticipated debut after honing his pottery skills under the guidance of Ryuichi Kakurezaki. True to Oiwa-sensei’s aesthetic of sparing no time or effort in his work, each piece features a unique, hand-carved *shinogi* (fluting) pattern. This, combined with the wet, gel-like texture of the glaze, allows one to deeply appreciate the inherent beauty of the clay itself. On the edges of the fluting, the blue glaze thins to a deep black, while the grooves of the fluting take on a mystical lapis lazuli hue, reminiscent of flickering blue flames. The deep, immersive quality of the glaze draws the eye into the depths of the vessel, and even the base features meticulously carved *shinogi* markings akin to claw marks—a delightful testament to an aesthetic that seeks to provide enjoyment from every angle.
