Description

This is a new Bizen sake cup by Hisanaga Koide, who made his long-awaited debut after completing a lengthy apprenticeship under Juro Harada. It is a piece where a strong firing and the raw texture of the clay coexist firmly; while it is well-fired with a profound hue, the surface itself retains a moist luster, as if it still holds the memory of being wet clay despite having been fired. The "goma" (ash glaze) is a somewhat dry, matte finish characteristic of Mr. Koide's work, which, while not flashy, makes for a captivating piece. After being formed by the coil method, the piece was shaved, creating an appealing "chirimen" crepe-like texture on the clay surface that gives it a seasoned, weathered atmosphere.
