Description
This new *nerikomi* (marble-patterned) sake cup is by Koji Nakahara, who studied under Fumio Kawabata and aims to create works that suit contemporary life. The cup features a black, marble-like surface base made from a mixture of several types of mountain clay, fired until dense. By pouring ash glaze only into the interior, the marbled pattern is transformed, while also improving the vessel's water resistance and texture. The foot is not marbled; it is made by first laying down a slab of blended clay, then building up with unblended clay to create the marbled pattern on the body. Each movement in the pattern of the clay has meaning, and combined with his meticulous style, it is a simple yet profound work.
