Description
This new Bizen sake bottle is by Hisanaga Koide, who has made his long-awaited debut after completing a lengthy apprenticeship under the master Juroku Harada. With its exceptionally striking, bold firing and wild, rustic form, the piece feels as though it truly embodies the Juroku philosophy. It has been fired so intensely that the clay is completely vitrified, and the layers of "goma" ash—formed by molten iron from the clay erupting and accumulating in multiple folds on the back—resemble a tiger's stripes; the scenery, which seems to have pushed Bizen clay to its absolute limits, leaves an unforgettable impact. The hand-coiled construction, built up slowly, possesses a pleasant, unrefined quality that ensures the bold firing does not become too overwhelming.
