Description
This Bizen katakuchi (spouted bowl) is by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with an exceptional aesthetic sense who is in a constant state of evolution regarding his clay, firing, and craft. It is a magnificent piece that unites a substantial "yellow sesame" (ki-goma) ash glaze with a clay body possessing a unique, alluring quality—a hallmark of Morimoto-sensei, who pours his heart and soul into the study of ancient ceramics. The yellow sesame glaze, which appears to have been showered over the entire piece, can only be described as dynamic; it is truly remarkable to see how it gathers along the rim, then, unable to bear its own weight, forms into droplets that slide down into the interior of the vessel. While thoughtfully designed for use as either a sake server or tableware, its refined form ensures it feels perfectly natural in either capacity. Whether moistened with water as tableware or with sake as a drinking vessel, the hue of the yellow sesame glaze becomes even more vivid, making it a delight to behold.
