Description

This is a Bizen sake server by Hisanaga Koide, who has made his long-awaited debut after completing a long apprenticeship under the master Juroku Harada. Featuring a strikingly bold firing and a rustic form, the piece clearly embodies the "Jurokuism" passed down from his mentor. The work takes a brilliant form that would stand perfectly well as a tea bowl, with a spout seamlessly added; its charm lies in the playfulness of taking such a powerful, imposing shape and whimsically deconstructing it. Although the orientation of the foot, rim, and tea bowl base (chadamari) differs from a standard bowl, the way it fits in the palm is exactly like one, and this carefully considered design ensures exceptional usability as a sake server. The deep, refined yellow sesame glaze (kigoma), fired slowly and thoroughly, is vibrant, and combined with the rich, sticky texture of the clay, it offers a quality that will impress even the most devoted fans of ancient Bizen ware.
