Description

This is a slightly earlier work by Iwao Kaneshige, a rectangular Ibe-style plate. Born and raised into the prestigious Kaneshige family, Iwao creates works filled with meticulous attention to detail, using the same kiln that has been used for generations by his grandfather, Toyo, and his father, Michiaki. The piece possesses a distinctive clay texture that is instantly recognizable as Iwao’s work; the minimal *goma* (ash glaze) applied during firing—a personal preference of the artist—paired with the sunset-orange clay body creates a refined, understated aesthetic. The clay contains small pebbles throughout, which occasionally pierce or protrude from the surface, adding varied nuances to the piece and creating a texture reminiscent of *Nanban* unglazed stoneware when combined with the orange clay tones. The rounded form, achieved through careful hand-beating (*tataki*), complements the earthy color, lending the piece a sense of warmth. Please note that due to the hand-beating technique, the base is not perfectly flat and may be unstable when placed on a table; we recommend using a soft mat underneath. (Although this is an earlier work, it is in unused condition.) Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
42.7cm length × 21.4cm width × 2.8cm height Iwao Kaneshige is the eldest son of Michiaki Kaneshige. Born and raised in a family of Bizen ware artists, he pursued the path of pottery out of a genuine passion for the craft. After honing his skills under the guidance of the Kaneshige family, he became independent in 1995 and held his first solo exhibition at a gallery in Okayama. He participated in the Kaneshige Family Exhibitions in 1999 and 2001.
