Description

This is a Hidasuki (fire-cord) plate by Yoshiteru Koriki, a popular young artist who was an apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. A work that offers a glimpse into the lively expression of the clay, characteristic of Koriki-sensei, who was mentored by the father-and-son team of Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige and entrusted with the secrets of clay preparation rooted in the Kaneshige school. Having thoroughly mastered the Sozan-style electric kiln firing, he keeps in mind the philosophy of "nurturing the clay in the kiln," just as with a climbing kiln, and carefully fires his work over the course of a week or more. As a result, the surface is truly soft and fresh, completing the piece as pottery without destroying the life that dwells within the clay. The color of the Hidasuki is vivid yet possesses a refined, moderate redness that avoids any hint of vulgarity, creating a magnificent contrast between the scarlet and moxa colors that is reminiscent of Sozan-sensei's work. After seven years of training, he built a climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to strike out on his own in 1996, and successfully produced his first firing the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, he was selected for the "Exhibition of Northern Confectionery Containers I Want to Use," and in 2002, he was selected for the "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition" for the first time.
