Description
This is "Céladon №6," a tea bowl by Toru Ichikawa, who made a brilliant debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a highly original and exceptional piece, characteristic of Ichikawa, who gives form to his ceaselessly overflowing ideas through the supreme medium of clay. True to its title "Céladon"—the French word for celadon—the piece utilizes a cool, refreshing celadon glaze that evokes the summer season, expressing an entirely new world view. The celadon glaze, edged with gold leaf, features fine crackles that possess an icy beauty, boasting the high level of perfection expected from an artist as dedicated to glaze research as Ichikawa. The matte black glaze, which lends a sense of focus to the whole piece, forms a pair with the celadon glaze, while the mirror-like gold accents placed here and there create a contrast in brilliance; the triad of celadon, black glaze, and gold creates a dizzying array of changing scenery across the entire work.
