Description
This is a brand-new Bizen sake flask, fresh from the kiln by popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a former apprentice of the master Sozan Kaneshige. Fired at the end of September 2017, this latest work showcases the consistent quality typical of Koriki’s style while offering a refined piece with rich variety. This work features the classic aesthetic of Bizen sake ware with an *haikaburi* (ash-covered) kiln transformation, where some of the ash has carbonized into a black-silver hue, revealing the intensity of the flames. The distinct *kumadori* (shading) and the fresh *nuke* (uncovered areas) have a sophisticated charm, perfectly capturing the appeal of Bizen ware through the "pottery-first firing technique" he learned under the tutelage of Sozan and Arihisa Kaneshige. The form, with its slightly sloping shoulders and tapered waist, carries a unique allure reminiscent of Sozan’s style, and the pleasant "toku-toku" sound it makes as you pour ensures it will be a delightful companion at any sake table.
Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included.
Rim diameter 3.6cm x body diameter 8.6cm x 8.5cm x height 13.2cm; capacity approx. 350cc Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Inspired by his father’s love for pottery, he decided to pursue a career in ceramics. After graduating from high school in 1989, he apprenticed under master potters Sozan and Arihisa Kaneshige to learn the craft. Following seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 to establish his independence, and successfully fired his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Exhibition of Northern Confectionery Vessels," and in 2002, he was selected for the "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition" for the first time.
