Description

This is a new Bizen sake cup by Takashi Soga, fresh from a June firing, which challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which ancient Bizen pottery was fired. To replicate the style of ancient Bizen, the artist does not use firebricks or other modern materials; the kiln is fired in a way that defies modern common sense regarding internal heat efficiency. As a result, it exhibits an exquisite clay texture that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches that of ancient Bizen. The base orange-hued clay surface features iron spots and fine mineral inclusions, creating a unique matte texture unattainable in modern climbing kilns—a flavor characteristic of Soga’s work that could be mistaken for antique Bizen. This is further combined with Soga’s other signature trait: a finely grained, dry *kase* texture that clings to the fingers, offering a wonderful tactile quality that makes you want to roll it in your palm forever. It is a fascinating work that fulfills the dream of using an ancient Bizen sake cup. Signed box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipping)
