Description

This is a brand new Bizen round plate, just removed from the kiln by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a former apprentice of the late master Sozan Kaneshige. A latest work from an early summer 2019 firing, this piece features the classic design of Koriki's round plates, characterized by a textured surface known as "ishime-hada" (stone-like surface), which has fine irregularities. While round plates tend to be thick and heavy, this one is meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail, resulting in a delightfully lightweight and highly functional piece. The center of the aesthetic is a beautiful scarlet hue produced by the high-quality "ta-tsuchi" (field clay), while the front features a "marunuke" (circular negative space) created by placing refractory clay, with "hidasuki" (fire-cord) markings added to create variation in the composition. Diameter 20.7cm x 20.7cm x Height 2.1cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who was an avid fan of pottery, he aspired to a career in ceramics. After graduating from high school, he studied pottery techniques under the tutelage of master Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989. After seven years of training, he struck out on his own in 1996, building a climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and successfully fired his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Kita no Kashiki" (Northern Confectionery Vessels) exhibition, and in 2002, he was selected for the "Chanoyu no Zokei" (Forms of Tea Ceremony) exhibition for the first time.
