Description

Hiroshi Goseki trained under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki before establishing his kiln in Ibaraki. This is a Hiyama-Bizen tea bowl by Hiroshi Goseki.

This tea bowl was crafted using a blend of Bizen and Hiyama clays, fired in the anagama kiln he built in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City.

Perhaps due to the influence of the Hiyama clay, it has a rugged, earthy texture in the hand, while the robust caramel-brown clay tone offers a charm distinct from traditional Bizen ware.

The exterior features sangiri with a unique luster and texture reminiscent of wet stone, while the interior draws the eye with matte tobi-goma scattered across the dry clay surface.

The form was initially shaped using slab construction and then meticulously refined by hand. The resulting shape is exquisite, conveying the quiet dignity and subtle movement characteristic of a Raku tea bowl.

The foot also reflects Goseki’s deep study of tea ceramics and the tea ceremony. Amidst its energetic and sharp design, a calm sense of maturity is beginning to emerge.
